Some Common Misunderstandings about Air Conditioners

Air conditioners are a large part of everyday life, particularly in a place like Orlando, where we have resort-style weather for much of the year, and our summers can become brutally hot and humid. But because people often take ACs for granted—basically like background noise—there are many misconceptions that have developed around them. We’d like to clear up a few of the more common ones that we’ve run into as HVAC contractors in the area.

A new air conditioning system should never run into problems

When you first have a new AC put in by experienced professionals, it will work so well that it’s easy to imagine that it will always work well. The truth is that, like any machine, an air conditioner will start to run down over time. Even the best maintenance won’t stave off problems forever. If you keep your air conditioner in good condition, it should run without trouble for years, but you can expect to run into repair needs after it is more than 10 years old, and need to be replaced after 15–20 years.

Brand X is so much better than Brand Y of air conditioner

The major brands of air conditioning systems are all at about the same level of quality. The difference is not in what brand of AC you get, it’s in the quality of service you receive for installation. A good installation job is what will make that brand of air conditioner do the job it should.

A big air conditioner will do a better job

The size of an AC (i.e. its cooling power) isn’t connected to how well it cools a house. If an air conditioner is too powerful, it will start to short-cycle, which will wear it down rapidly and cause costs to soar. To find an AC unit that’s not too big and not too small but just right, you need to make sure you have professionals handle the job.
