2 Abnormal Air Conditioner Sounds to Keep an Ear Out for

You know the particular sounds your air conditioning system makes more than anyone else does. It’s true; while in operation your air conditioner can be pretty noisy. However as you use your air conditioning system more and more frequently this season, it’s important that you listen for any unusual noises you haven’t discovered before.

Strange air conditioner noises typically indicate a problem that needs to be repaired right away. Keep reading to learn more about two common air conditioner noises that should prompt professional repairs right away.

Grinding

Your air conditioner houses a component called the air handler. The function of this AC system part is to move air throughout your home during its operation. The air handler is essentially a large motor with a fan attached to it. During operation, a lot of strain is placed on this component, so therefore it is equipped with a series of lubricated bearings.

These bearings help your air handler operate more smoothly, and thus help your air conditioner function smoothly. However, they do wear down over time. When this occurs, the friction on the air handler increases and it produces a loud grinding noise. If you hear this sound coming from your system, be sure to call for repairs as soon as you can. Otherwise, your air handler can overheat and burn out.

Hissing

Have you noticed a hissing or bubbling noise coming from your AC system? This is likely the result of air bubbles in your refrigerant line. This means that there is a leak occurring, and this type of leak will cause the output of your AC system to decline rapidly.

Eventually, your air conditioner will break down entirely if this problem is ignored. As soon as you notice this noise, the best thing to do is shut off your system and call for repairs. A refrigerant leak would need to be sealed and the lost refrigerant replaced to restore the function of your AC unit.
